'Sonic the Hedgehog' movie zooms to Paramount

A hybrid CG-animated/live-action feature, the movie will be written by Patrick Casey and Josh Miller and produced by Neal H. Moritz through his Original Film banner, along with Marza Animation Planet's Takeshi Ito and Mie Onishi.

The upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie is now in the works at Paramount Pictures.

Deadpool director Tim Miller and Toby Ascher are the executive producers, while Blur Studio's Jeff Fowler will direct the film.

The Sonic the Hedgehog video game was first released by SEGA in 1991, since selling more than 360 million copies on various consoles.

In addition to Miller, who is executive producing, and Moritz, Jeff Fowler (who worked in animation research and development on the Where The Wild Things Are adaptation) is now slated to direct.

According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, Moritz will produce the project, bringing along an extensive resume of production credits that includes the "Fast and the Furious" franchise and 2007's "I Am Legend". Apparently, Paramount plans to mix live action with CGI for the film. Miller is not directing the movie though as one has yet to be named. Since his debut, he's been in countless games, comics, cartoons and had his likeness slapped on just about every bit of merchandise you can imagine. The studio took over Sonic after Sony let the film rights lapse.

It's been a huge trend within the last few years to adapt video games in to films.
