Panama Papers case: Nawaz's son-in-law arrested on return to Pakistan

Nawaz asked to refrain from confrontation

The Sharifs have denied any wrongdoing and have labelled the corruption proceedings against them as politically motivated.

The arrest comes in lines with a corruption cases pending against him under Pakistan's anti-corruption authorities.

Maryam criticised the arrest of her husband and said he was taken into custody even though he had come back to face the case."Those who want to appear of their free will are arrested from the airport, but we are not afraid of it", she said.

Sanaullah blamed that Nawaz Sharif, who always ensures Pakistan's progress, is being personally targeted.

NAB has named him in one of three corruption cases filed on September 8 against Pakistan's former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maraym, sons Husain and Hasan and his son-in-law Safdar. Sharif attended the two previous hearings but flew to London last week. "They live overseas and the laws of the land here don't apply to them". Copies of references have also been handed over to the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) leader. His lawyer Khawaja Haris on Monday requested that the judge exempt Sharif from appearing.

After hearing arguments from the prosecution, the court accepted the bail of both Maryam and her husband.

The court has fixed October 13 as a date to indict Sharif, his daughter and son-in-law.

Nawaz was disqualified by the Supreme Court in July for not declaring a source of income that he disputes receiving.

According to legal experts, in such a situation the accountability court may separate the case of the present accused or deem those absent as absconders.

Sharif's ousting stems from the Panama Papers leaks in 2016 that appeared to show that his daughter and two sons owned offshore holding companies registered in the British Virgin Islands and used them to buy properties in London. Those who have sent representatives of 200 million people home should also be held accountable as per law, she held.

"We (will) file an extradition petition in a London's court once Interpol issues their red warrants", the official said.
