New Study Reveals Popular Baby Foods and Formulas Contain Arsenic, Lead and BPA
A study of the top-selling as well as emerging brands of baby food products such as infant formula, juice drinks, and cereals revealed that many of these products contain toxic chemicals such as arsenic, lead, and acrylamide.
The Clean Label Project also reported that, in looking only at the infant formulas they tested, 80 percent of them contained higher than acceptable levels of arsenic.
The laboratory tests found that 65 percent of the products contained arsenic, 58 percent cadmium, 36 percent lead, and 10 percent acrylamides.
The study also concluded 60 percent of products that listed "BPA free", tested positive for the industrial chemical.
Baby food and infant formulas which are largely consumed across the globe now bring an alarming news. The U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2016 proposed a limit of 100 parts per billion of arsenic in infant rice cereal, which means the chemicals detected were not mere trace amounts. The World Health Organization states that arsenic can lead to developmental defects, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, neurotoxicity and cancer. All these brands scored a two out of five on the non-profit organization's toxicity report card.
And, according to the data from the Clean Label Project, there are other chemicals in foods that parents need to be aware of.
Clean Label Project opined that what was not on the label was sometimes what was most important.
Arsenic and cadmium are naturally occurring elements found in soil, water and air, so it is not surprising that they are found in food. This was already found in baby food before.
Low levels of lead have been linked to lower IQs, slower growth, hearing issues, anemia, and behavioral problems, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
According to the Clean Label Project, a nonprofit that advocates for product labeling transparency, a five-month study into hundreds of baby foods, formulas, and snacks has found that the vast majority contain some level of poisonous materials like arsenic or lead.
"The baby industry needs to do a better job in protecting America's most vulnerable population", Bowen said.
