While thousands and thousands of people were evacuated from the Virgin Islands, another kind of evacuation was taking place. If you happen to come across a dog or cat, or any other animal in need, check out these Animal Rescue Hotlines.

"This is a Herculean effort to save these animals", Gear told Virginia Beach TV news station WAVY 10.

Sali Gear had originally planned to fly around 140 animals off the Caribbean islands of St Croix, St Thomas and St John over the course of a week after Hurricane Irma left them homeless.

Nevertheless, it was hurricane Maria that made Gear to firm her mind up to act swiftly and rescue just as many dogs all in one go, by cutting down on multiple trips. The chartered flight alone cost $112,000 and all of the carriers cost $5,000. She told the Pilot: "I did it because it had to be done". Originally, she planned to fly groups of 20 animals gathered from St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix up to the continental USA every day for a week following Irma's land fall.

On Tuesday, the 300 animals safely arrived in Norfolk, Virginia - some in cages marked with the note "I survived Hurricane Irma".

Almost 50 dogs had been rescued by state authorities in Florida before Irma even hit.

The Florida Health Department issued a message on Twitter before the storm hit, pleading with citizens to stick with their pets. "She needs supplies, donations and help walking dogs".

Finally, the furry refugees landed in the USA on Tuesday, where volunteers cared for them at Gear's farm while foster homes or relatives of their owners could be found.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says they're still finding animals alone wherever the storm hit.

'I honestly, I was about to start crying, ' said volunter Tinsley Sarrett. They're relocating 100 animals from Miami to a specially devised shelter in SC.

On Sept. 26, she loaded up a truck and a U-Haul and will drive some items down to Miami so they can be shipped to St. Croix.
