He lost the first set to Busta but made a strong comeback later in the match to play his maiden Grand Slam final.

Kevin Anderson stretches for a backhand against Pablo Carreno Busta.

So after having three operations on his left wrist in the interim, del Potro will be trying to take out those two greats of the game back-to-back again: He scuttled the possibility of the first Roger vs. Rafa showdown at Flushing Meadows by taking out Federer in the quarterfinals 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (8), 6-4 Wednesday night.

Speaking of his own performance at the US Open - where he reached the semi-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time, ' the Spaniard added 'Of course.

With his win over Querrey, Anderson became the first South African to reach a Grand Slam semi-final since Wayne Ferreira at the 2003 Australian Open.

It will pit Anderson against either Rafael Nadal or Juan Martin del Potro, who were to play the second semifinal at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Kevin Anderson has evened the U.S. Open men's semifinals, becoming the first player to take a set off Pablo Carreno Busta in the tournament.

The 6ft 8in Anderson needed some inspiration and he found it with a backhand cross-court victor that brought him level at one set all.

It was now the South African making all the running, earning six break points in the third set. He took the set when the Spaniard double-faulted at 5-6, 30-all and Anderson then smacked a forehand victor into the corner on set point. Anderson won the match in straight sets, 6-3 7-6 but dropped his serve twice on that occasion. "My emotion at the end kind of summed it up". Although he holds a 0-4 head-to-head record against Nadal, the South African will be looking to continue his incredible run and cause a huge upset in the final.

Spaniard Busta happy to play in Nadal's shadow

The No. 28 seed Anderson had been broken only three times in his first 90 service games in the tournament.

"I need to be very focused with my serve and play aggressive", Nadal said, "because if you let him play from good positions with his forehand, you are dead".

Anderson, who stands at 2.04 metres tall, climbed into his player's box to embrace his wife, brother and coach Neville Godwin after Carreno Busta's forehand found the net to finish their almost three-hour contest.

"It will be an interesting match, and I'm very excited to go out there and compete in the semifinals". He committed 14 unforced errors to just one for Carreno Busta in the set.

"It was very hard at the end of previous year", he said.

The U.S. Open hasn't had a champion who didn't drop a set since Neale Fraser in 1960. "He said:" If he's in the final, he can beat everyone.

It's the furthest either man has ever gone in a Grand Slam tournament.

Starting the fourth set serving, it was a bright start for Carreno Busta as he looked to have regained his composure and found the momentum.
