Renewing his attacks on Comey, Trump loses the plot
Given the avalanche of new details in the Trump-Russia probe and whether President Trump obstructed justice in firing FBI Director James B. Comey, it's not surprising that Republicans are fortifying the president's defenses.
For months since Mueller's probe began, small exposes have emerged, providing insight into the direction that the probe is headed in - at points the probe intensified to the extent that many, even those close to Trump, assumed the President might just fire Mueller.
Trump wrote the letter in May with top political aide Stephen Miller, with the intention of sending the letter to Comey to explain his firing. Mueller is now looking into whether Trump tried to get the Federal Bureau of Investigation to back off its probe of Flynn and whether the Comey firing constituted an attempt to obstruct justice. The two men were particularly angry about testimony Mr. Comey had given to the Senate Judiciary Committee the previous week, when he said "it makes me mildly nauseous" to think his handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation might have had an impact on the 2016 election.
On Thursday, The Daily Beast broke news that special counsel Bob Mueller's investigation into the Trump campaign for possible collusion with Russian Federation now includes help from an IRS unit that focuses "exclusively on financial crime, including tax evasion and money laundering".

The Times story does not indicate how Mueller obtained the letter, but given the sensitivity of the fire Comey effort, someone from inside the White House had to have given the draft to the Special Counsel. That investigation, which had been overseen by Comey, is also looking into the financial dealings of several Trump associates.
Comey was sacked May 9.
A subsequent letter written by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein was used instead as the basis to terminate Comey. It focused on Mr Comey's handling of Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders says reports of Schiller leaving are "not true".
Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see where this new allegation takes Comey, Clinton and Trump as many observers are taking sides as the above tweet stream shows.
The earlier letter could serve as key evidence to Mueller's team, which is now investigating whether Trump fired Comey to impede the FBI investigation into his campaign associates' ties to Russian Federation.
