China Becomes Latest Country To Consider The Ban Of Gas, Diesel Vehicles

Xin Guobin, a vice minister at the ministry, said 9 September that China will set a deadline for automakers to end sales of fossil-fuel-powered vehicles, becoming the biggest market do so.

Now it's seeking to cut back on its reliance on imported oil, as the world's second-largest consumer, behind the US.

France and Britain announced in July they will stop sales of gasoline and diesel automobiles by 2040 as part of efforts to reduce pollution and carbon emissions that contribute to global warming.

"This will ask everyone, from energy and technology sectors as well as traditional automakers, to change to the lane to develop new powertrains", Zhang Yang, a vice president at electric vehicle company Nio, told Bloomberg.

The Chinese market is already dominated by domestic manufacturers like BAIC and BYD, which have aggressively pursued the electric vehicle business. Chinese drivers are also increasingly adopting greener vehicles, past year over 500,000 alternative fuel vehicles were sold in the country.

China is the world's biggest vehicle market, having made 28 million cars past year.

Worldwide auto giants like Ford, and Volkswagen are aiming to develop fully electric cars in China.

Late last month, Reuters reported that China was likely to delay implementing tough new sales quotas for electric plug-in vehicles, giving global automakers more time to prepare.

But a plan from China could be even bigger news. But for now, the Chinese government didn't define a target date, as done by both France and the UK.
