Federer comes through Ferrer test to reach the last eight at the Rogers Cup
Meanwhile, Roger Federer continued his pursuit of a third Rogers Cup title, but his first in Montreal.
German fourth seed Alexander Zverev upset Roger Federer 6-3, 6-4 in the Rogers Cup final in Montreal on Sunday to join the Swiss right-hander as the most trophy-laden player on the ATP Tour this year with five titles.
Zverev, who improved to 2-2 in his career against Federer, was especially gracious in victory.
Zverev stretched his match winning run to nine.
The win in Montreal also gives Zverev his second Masters 1000 win in 2017.
The Swiss can still take the number one ranking if results go his way at the Cincinnati Open this week. He earned US$220,760 - more than doubling his career prize money.
At 20 years old, Zverev is quickly finding himself and rising rapidly up the rankings with these final appearances. But the German was too sharp, winning 81 per cent of the points off his serve compared to 64 per cent for Shapovalov.
And Shapovalov nearly struck in the seventh game, but he wasted three break points at 0-40. He won 75 percent of service points in handing Federer, 36, his third loss of the season.
The 18-year-old Shapovalov, from Richmond Hill, Ontario, advanced to a quarterfinal meeting Friday night with France's Adrian Mannarino, who defeated Hyeon Chung of South Korea 6-3, 6-3.
The final outcome makes it 2-2 with Alexander Zverev delivering a compelling win over Federer. (Nadal won en route to being crowned tournament champ that year, if you were wondering).
With this win-his fifth of 2017-he became one of the only players aged 20 or younger to take down two Masters 1000 events in a season. "Today, I felt that I didn't get into the rhythm of the match and I didn't feel the ball well. I got some decent rhythm going".
At the end that's what matters because I spent hours and hours on the practice courts in the previous year, he said.
"I have reached levels that I never thought I would be able to reach, winning so many titles".
'I'm happy I'm playing as well as I am this year on the match courts.
"I think those young players don't quite know what to expect, and (neither) do I, because nobody quite knows", said Federer.
The announcement of Zverev's arrival undoubtedly means an extremely strong field is being built up, with Grand Slam champions Murray and Nadal both confirmed to be taking part in the tournament.
"It's a huge opportunity for them". Playing the final was a good thing.
