The Danish food authority, Fødevarestyrelsen, has confirmed that 40 eggs infected with the poisonous insecticide Fipronil have been found in a bakery in Jutland.

Van der Molen says the Dutch raids on Thursday are part of a joint action with Belgian authorities.

Tests meanwhile found "small quantities" of fipronil in eggs sold in Luxembourg supermarket chain Cactus, which had originally come from the Netherlands, the government said.

An Aldi UK spokesman said: "There's no impact on Aldi in the UK, and all Aldi UK's eggs are 100 per cent British".

European Commission spokeswoman Anna-Kaisa Itkonen said that Netherlands, Belgium and Germany warned other countries about the possibility of having exported contaminated eggs to them.

The Dutch investigation, they added, is focusing on a Dutch company that allegedly applied the Fipronil, the presumed Belgian supplier and a Dutch trader who worked together with the supplier.
