Kenya 2017 Obasanjo calls for peace dialogue

Authorities and witnesses say a dozen people, including a 9-year-old girl, have been fatally shot following the official announcement that Kenyatta won a second term in Tuesday's election.

Angry protests flared in opposition strongholds in Nairobi as well as in Kisumu after the election commission declared Kenyatta the victor in a hotly disputed vote over rival Raila Odinga.

Most of the protesters were supporters of Odinga, who has rejected the results of the presidential election, calling the vote rigged.

Hundreds of riot police were in the streets of the capital, Nairobi, over fears of further protests by opposition supporters, who called the vote a "charade" and said challenging the outcome in court wasn't an option.

The 72-year-old politician has now had four unsuccessful attempts to win the presidency.

"We are not going to be party to it". "We reach out to you". On Friday morning, in anticipation of the official results being announced, Odinga's supporters staged small demonstrations in some areas, taunting the police and chanting "No Raila, no peace".

Somalia President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo said Saturday the re-election of Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta in the just concluded presidential elections will help foster stronger ties between the two countries.

In a victory speech, Kenyatta said he was extending a "hand of friendship" to the opposition, which alleged that the election commission's database had been hacked and results were manipulated against Odinga. Another five people were injured by gunfire in Kisumu, Katana said.

"We are exhausted of being ruled by Kikuyus", said Wycliffe Onyalo, 25, who was demonstrating in favor of Odinga on Friday morning on the main street of Kibera, before the results were announced.

Odinga alleged that hackers infiltrated the election commission's computer system in favor of his opponent.

It also said hacking claims by Nasa should be investigated.

Kenyans resumed normal activities on Saturday after several weeks of election tension across the country. "They should prioritize dialogue and de-escalation, and only use force and firearms if all peaceful means fail, and only where necessary to protect life", said Muthoni Wanyeki.

Local government official Wilson Njega confirmed one person had been shot dead outside Kisumu in protests, while an AFP reporter saw three patients with gunshot wounds in the city's hospital.
