First signs of Trump support fading in Rust Belt battleground states new poll

In Michigan, 48% of voters said they would prefer a Congress controlled by Democrats, compared to 35% who said they want to see the reins remain in Republican hands. MI voters by a 42-to-39 percent margin said the United States economy has strengthened thanks to Trump's decisions. Around 800 registered voters were polled with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

Trump carried the trio of states in the 2016 presidential election by a total of 80,000 votes and became the first Republican to carry them since the 1980s.

New NBC News Marist polls released Sunday find President Donald Trump's approval rating is below 40-percent in three states key to his election.

While former President Barack Obama won Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania in 2008 and 2012, Trump was able to flip the states during the 2016 election, helping put him over the electoral college threshold needed to win the presidency.

A new NBC News/Marist poll found 36 percent of MI voters viewed Trump favorably, while 35 percent of Pennsylvania voters and 34 percent of Wisconsin voters, agreed.

In Pennsylvania, 35 percent approve and 54 percent disapprove, while in Wisconsin, 34 percent give him a thumbs up and 56 percent do not. Sixty-three percent in Pennsylvania said the same thing. The poll consisted of 795 MI voters, 773 voters in Pennsylvania, and 801 Wisconsin voters. In Wisconsin, Democrats were favored with 46 percent.

The polls were conducted from August 13 to 17, after the violence at a white supremacist rally in Virginia and following Trump's initial response to the violence, in which he didn't directly call out white supremacists and instead placed the blame on "many sides".

Pennsylvania and Wisconsin voters preferred the Democrats too, with Pennsylvanians giving the Dems a 10 point advantage and Wisconsinites giving them an 8 point edge.

Fifty-five percent of MI voters and 54 percent of Pennsylvania voters agreed.

The president's reaction to the violence was widely criticized after he placed blame for the violence on "both sides" and appeared to suggest there were people on the white supremacist march who were neither neo-Nazis nor white supremacists. On Monday, Trump directly condemned white supremacists, neo-Nazis and the KKK.
