NFL Rumors: Jay Cutler, Colin Kaepernick An Option For Miami Dolphins?

Tannehill reinjures left knee in practice

The Miami Dolphins are signing the veteran quarterback to a one-year contract worth $10 million including incentives, NFL Media's Ian Rapoport reported Sunday.

As the Miami Dolphins continue to brace for the likelihood that Ryan Tannehill will undergo surgery to fix stretched ligaments in his left knee, they remain focused on Jay Cutler as their top choice to replace him, sources close to the situation said Sunday.

Cutler called time on his career with the Chicago Bears at the end of last season and he was set to join the commentary ranks full-time with Fox Sports until the call came from Miami. That includes a base salary of $5 million. After the scrimmage on Saturday, Dolphins head coach Adam Gase said he does expect Larsen to return at some point during the season. The 34-year-old quarterback should be able to re-acclimate to Gase's system quickly, but will need to build chemistry with his new teammates in Miami. He also threw the lowest number of interceptions (11) in a season where he appeared in at least 15 games. An MRI was inconclusive, and the Dolphins are consulting with specialists to determine whether surgery is necessary, which would likely shelve him for the season.

Tannehill, who missed the final four games of last season with two sprained ligaments in his left knee, reinjured it a week into training camp Thursday.

"I don't know if retirement is the right word; I don't feel that anyone ever really retires from the NFL", Cutler said in a statement when the Fox job was announced in May.

Don't get too excited about the possibility of Jay Cutler's color commentary on National Football League games just yet. Before the Tannehill news, Cutler was all-in on his new broadcasting career.

There are plenty of potential alternatives to signing Cutler, Gase said.

Meanwhile, backup Matt Moore is stuck in the quarterback equivalent of the friend zone.
