A man was arrested on Friday (Aug 25) after attacking police with a knife outside Queen Elizabeth II's Buckingham Palace residency in London, police said.

A statement from New Scotland Yard said the officers stopped the man around 8:35 p.m. (1:35 p.m. MDT) because they believed he was in possession of a knife.

The officers suffered minor injuries and did not need to be treated at hospital.

"A man has been arrested on suspicion of GBH (grievous bodily harm) and assault on police", the Metropolitan Police said in on Twitter.

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said she would not comment on security issues.
