Iran's Supreme Leader confirms Rowhani as president

Iran President Hassan Rouhani vows to end isolation as he begins his second term

Meeting with Mogherini before the ceremony in parliament, Rouhani called for greater efforts to uphold the 2015 nuclear deal struck by Tehran and world powers in the face of new USA sanctions passed last week. The 2015 accord stipulated a gradual lifting of anti-Iran sanctions in exchange for Tehran's ensuring the peaceful nature of its nuclear program.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani tends to restore relations with regional and Western countries but the risk of war seems very real in the Middle East, an Iranian political expert and author believes.

"I declare once again that with the election concluded, the time for unity and cooperation has begun", he said.

"Today, Iranians have learned how to take measures concerning the enemy's plots and Iranian officials know how to deal with the enemy". Trump also recently signed a new package of sanctions against Iran. French company Total defied USA pressure in July by signing a multibillion-dollar gas deal with Iran.

Iranian officials say they have prepared a 16-point document for how they will respond to the new sanctions, without giving details.

Acknowledging that hard times lie ahead in pursuing the country's foreign policy, the Iranian president urged for the rationality and objectivity of the state's actions with regards to the outside world while recalling that "the nuclear deal is a sign of Iran's goodwill on the global stage". He has repeatedly criticized the slow pace of economic recovery since most global sanctions on Iran were lifted past year. Trump said in a statement on the occasion of signing of the law the document was flawed and some of its provisions stood at variance with the US Constitution.

The U.S. legislation imposes mandatory penalties on people involved in Iran's ballistic missile program, as well as those who do business with them. Rouhani's economic agenda faces domestic resistance, as the powerful Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps is reluctant to expose its grip on the economy to foreign competition and Supreme Leader Khamenei has called for a "resistance economy".

Araqchi said the Europeans would not allow Trump to destroy the nuclear deal.

Zarif and Mogherini also underlined the need for the boosting of the relations between Iran and Europe in different areas, especially in the economic field.

Ellie Geranmayeh, an Iran analyst with the European Council on Foreign Relations, said the timing of the new U.S. sanctions package was "unfortunate".

"The European Union strongly supports the JCPOA, and this is the common position of all European countries".
