First Edition August 17: Freetown Sierra Leone Mudslide kills over 400

Sierra Leone's government has urged family members to identify their loved ones' remains following mudslides and floods in the capital which killed more than 300 people.

According to a release from the PNP today, it is extending hands of friendship and solidarity to our brothers and sisters in Sierra Leone as they put their lives back together.

The government has warned residents to evacuate a mountainside where a large crack has opened.

"We fear there are no more survivors", he said.

Also the United Kingdom has sent their condolence message to the government and people of Sierra Leone following the tragic events of August 14 in Freetown and the surrounding areas.

With more rain forecast for the coming week, further mudslides were a threat. We have young people being displaced, people being orphaned, we have problems of medication and medical supplies. Incongruously, on the same hillsides, near swaths stripped bare by the surging mud, fully intact homes still stand, with untouched, lush vegetation.

"Fortunately the village of Hastings has not been as badly affected as areas higher in the hills but the impact of the disaster will affect everybody on the peninsular as people flee from the worst affected areas into nearby areas such as Hastings seeking help and shelter".
