IEDA board to consider incentives for possible Apple Inc. data center in Waukee

(Waukee) - State economic development officials Thursday morning awarded almost 20 million dollars in tax incentives to Apple, which plans to place two data centers in the Des Moines suburb of Waukee.

Apple's newest data center is coming to the Midwest. To start, the Iowa Economic Development Authority awarded the company $19.65 million in investment tax credits at a Thursday meeting, the Register says. The company has pledged to power all of its global operations with 100 percent renewable energy, and has already reached that goal in the U.S. and 23 other countries.

In addition, the company will contribute up to $100 million to a newly created public improvement fund dedicated to community development and infrastructure around Waukee, he said.

The city of Waukee approved multi-year property tax abatements and infrastructure improvements totaling $194 million.

Apple CEO Tim Cook was in Waukee this afternoon to announce the deal alongside Gov. Reynolds and other local politicians.

Apple said it will invest $1.3 billion to build a data center in Waukee, Iowa to host the company's various services in North America. The company plans to build a $1.3 billion facility in Waukee, which is about 20 minutes outside the state's capital.

The economic development board's chairman, Chris Murray, though said such projects bring people who build homes, generating tax revenue and causing other businesses to look into moving to Iowa. IEDA director Debi Durham believes the 50 jobs created by Apple are just a small piece of the project's benefit to the state.

The decision was lauded by Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, a Republican.

The data center is expected to be completed by 2020 with construction starting early next year. "Apple is responsible for 2 million jobs in all 50 states and we're proud today's investment will add to the more than 10,000 jobs we already support across Iowa, providing even more economic opportunity for the community".
