Daugaard: Medicaid cuts to hit SD less

Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mc Connell at a news conference at the Capitol talking about the Senate’s decision to confirm Supreme Court justice Neil Gorsuch

After the Senate voted July 25 to proceed with the health care debate, Bishop Frank J. Dewane of Venice, Florida, urged senators of both parties to "work together to advance changes that serve the common good".

President Donald Trump says that if the Senate wants to pass legislation, it "must immediately go to a 51 vote majority", but his math is off.

The Senate is in the process of voting on a series of amendments as Republicans push to repeal at least parts of former President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act. The sad fact is that many Republican constituencies stand to be harmed by a repeal and ill-thought replacement bill as much as anyone else.

In response to the recent blitz of votes of US Senate Republicans regarding their efforts to endanger healthcare for almost 33 million individuals, Sen. Dean Heller (NV), Shelley Moore Capito (WV), Susan Collins (ME) and Lisa Murkowski (AK) also voted against the bill, as did all Democrats. Whether repeal-and-replace, repeal-and-delay, or a "skinny repeal" - every attempt would utterly erode access to care for people who need it most and could increase the number of people without insurance by 32 million, including over 1 million LGBTQ people.

Soaring prices and fewer choices may greet customers when they return to the Affordable Care Act's insurance marketplaces this fall because insurers still don't know whether they will receive critical payments from the federal government.

While many Americans across the country enjoy the traditional summer respite, there's no slowing down for members of Congress who face another packed week of hearings, meetings, votes and negotiations. That's an understatement as many low- to medium-income Americans are about to find out when the rug is pulled out from under them. The U.S. House of Representatives passed a replacement bill earlier this year.

McConnell put the health bill on hold and announced that the Senate would move onto other legislation next week.
