The president, who is commander in chief of the US armed forces, likened the $12.9 billion warship to "an incredible work of art" and boasted about the American labor that went into building a vessel that eventually will house thousands of sailors and crew members.

The new carrier will be the flagship of the new class of "super carriers", the first new class in 40 years and the most expensive warships ever built.

President Donald Trump said Saturday that our new state-of-the art aircraft carrier is "A 100,000-ton message to the world" of American military might.

The U.S.S. Gerald R. Ford is billed as the world's most technologically advanced nuclear powered aircraft carrier.

Navy bosses boast that the new ship is a "technological marvel" and claim it will carry much more than just fighter jets. Once officially deployed in 2020, it will house 2,600 sailors, which the Navy says will save more than $4 billion over the ship's 50-year lifespan, according to the Associated Press.

The commissioning of the U.S.S. Gerald R. Ford - the nation's largest aircraft carrier to date - is being commissioned on July 22 in Norfolk, Virginia.

The Ford, built by Huntington Ingalls Industries Inc., isn't expected to be ready for combat deployment for at least four years, having yet to complete its navigation and cyber-security inspections.

Adm. John Richardson, chief of naval operations, said the carrier is equipped with new technologies and warfighting systems created to help transform naval warfare.

Addressing Trump, Mattis said, "Mr. president, you will send this ship in harm's way and [it] will happily sail in harm's way for you, for our nation and for what we stand for". After military service, Mr Ford was elected to the House of Representatives, serving MI until he was tapped by then-president Richard Nixon to become vice president.

US Navy brass plan to spend another £30 billion building another two sister ships - the USS John F. Kennedy and the USS Enterprise.

A marine has breezblocks broken across his stomach.

"The new technology and warfighting capabilities that Ford brings will transform naval warfare, making us a more lethal Navy", Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson said in a Navy release.

The USS Ford will go through various tests and workups at sea before becoming operational in the next few years.

The air wing to support the Ford could add more personnel to the ship, which is created to house more than 4,600 crew members. The Navy veteran's presidency was largely about restoring trust in the Oval Office, and that's represented in the Ford Foundation's motto: "Integrity at the helm".
