Mayawati: Top India Dalit leader quits parliament

BSP chief Mayawati on Tuesday quit the Rajya Sabha, blaming the BJP and the Chair for not allowing her to raise the issue of anti-Dalit violence in Uttar Pradesh. Mayawati when visited the riot-hit area, she blamed the Yogi Adityanath government for the failure of law and order situation. Five minutes (Mayawati was first allowed three minutes, then given an extension and was later reminded that her time was over) was too much time given to a member to make her point.

The Uttar Pradesh politician today staged a walk out from the Rajya Sabha while the Monsoon Session was underway; claiming that she would resign if she wasn't allowed to speak. She has been in national politics since a bit of time now. "I have not finished". On the one hand, the BJP has nominated Ram Nath Kovind as their presidential candidate to appease Dalits while on the other they are so hostile towards a Dalit leader for raising issues of atrocities against them.

Mayawati, former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and Rajya Sabha member, has resigned from her membership.

She later met Vice-President Hamid Ansari and handed over her resignation.

Due to the uproar, the chair adjourned the Rajya Sabha.

Reacting to her announcement to quit the seat, senior BJP leader Dr Subramaniam Swamy said, "If she resigns, the seat will come to us as we have more than 70 per cent of Assembly strength in the state legislature".

He stressed that the party's next move would be to take this issue to the people and expose the BJP's doublespeak on Dalits. Speaking about Sahranpur riots, Mayawati alleged that BJP is spreading communalism. That's why she resigned in frsutration. Her tenure is anyway going to end in the next session. Siddiqui, however, retorted that she was selling seats for money, a charge raised against her by many people who left her fold in the immediate past.

The BSP leader further said if she was not allowed to speak about the troubles faced by the weaker sections of society, she should not be in Parliament.
