Cyborg to face Evinger at UFC 214 after Anderson pulls out
UFC officials confirmed to ESPN on Tuesday night that Anderson was forced to withdraw from the UFC women's featherweight title bout for personal reasons. Stepping in for Anderson is Invicta FC's bantamweight champ, Tonya Evinger. "She is as tough as they come and will bring the fight to me the entire time".
Anderson became the Invicta featherweight champion after she defeated Charmaine Tweet in January.
"This is something I've thought about doing - going up to 145 pounds - just to get more competition", Evinger said.
Justin Gilbert reportedly suspended one year by NFL
With the Steelers, Gilbert mainly got on the field as a kick returner and returned three kicks for 69 yards in 2016. Both suspensions that Gilbert has received during his short career have been for substance abuse policy violations.
The Aussie was set to fight the pound-for-pound best female fighter in the world at UFC 214 in Anaheim, California this July in a much anticipated showdown between the heavy hitters. "July 29th, I am expecting Tonya Evinger to give me the type of fight that can help us both earn our first UFC performance bonus". This came after reigning 145-pound champion Germaine de Randamie was stripped of her belt for refusing to fight Cyborg, and Anderson got the call.
Evinger (19-5, 1 NC) is unbeaten since 2011. Now, she is still getting the title shot, but against a fighter who is not used to the size Cyborg will be in the Octagon. The thing that excites me the most about fighting for the UFC belt, is I know the fans of Brazil have a sense of pride when they see us bring their belts back home! Evinger-who is the 135-pound champion of Invicta FC-will take her place. I think I'm a ideal matchup; I drag people where they don't want to go and I make a fight hard for them.
UFC 214 is headlined by UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and former champion Jon Jones in what will settle the score for the light heavyweight division once and for all.
