Wildfire north of Breckenridge prompts evacuations

A wildfire has scorched about 80 acres (32.4 hectares) and forced the evacuation of 463 homes near the Colorado mountain town of Breckenridge.

The Peak 7 neighborhood in Summit County remains under evacuation as of 8 a.m., Thursday, July 6, following the spread of the Peak Two Fire.

The town of Breckenridge, home to ski resorts and other tourist destinations, is on pre-evacuation notice.

"We would like to take credit for that but we would like give credit to the wind because when the wind did shift it actually pushed the fire back into the burned area and actually slowed it down", says one firefighter.

The entire town is being warned they should be prepared to evacuate.

Visible flames have tapered off but heavy smoke is still billowing from the site and moving toward Frisco. It's unclear at this time how the fire started. Crews will keep an eye on the fire throughout the night.

The Type III Incident Command now in charge of the fire is expected to transition to a Type I Incident Command team over the next two days.
