Hands Off Assata: Cuba Says “Nah” To Returning Assata Shakur
On June 16th, the USA president announced in Miami the restriction for American citizens to travel in the town-to-town exchange category and greater vigilance over other travelers.
"Today's announcement is a step in the right direction to reverse an ill-advised and misguided Cuba policy that has failed to deliver on its promises, left the Cuban people worse off, and allowed American fugitives, like wanted terrorist and cop-killer Joanne Chesimard, to escape justice", Menendez said.
The Cuban government responded in a statement that Trump's discourse was laden with "hostile rhetoric" of the past, but the last two years "have demonstrated that the two countries ... can cooperate" and live peacefully in a civilised manner while respecting their differences.
Speaking in Miami, Trump said the rollback of restrictions on travel to Cuba had resulted in "more oppression" by its political regime.
Cuba is no longer a satellite state of the Soviet Union.
Certain financial transactions involving Cuba, including processing by USA banks of "U turn" transactions involving Cuba and of US -dollar monetary instruments presented indirectly by Cuban financial institutions-as well as the opening of bank accounts in the U.S.to facilitate remittances and other authorized transactions. Only group-organized, people-to-people travel for educational purposes will continue to be authorized. But Obama changed all that.
The Trump administration is vague on what changes it actually intends to make, though officials have identified extradition of political prisoners and transactions between American businesses and those owned by the Cuban government as priorities.
The forthcoming regulations will be prospective and thus should not affect existing contracts and licenses, although OFAC retains the discretion to determine whether specific travel or activities should be limited or otherwise affected by the regulatory changes. This move also harms U.S. business interests, from the airline industry to the hotel and agriculture industries, all of which would benefit from a better U.S. -Cuba relationship.
He pointed out that, in addition to ignoring the majority opinion of the Cuban people, who wants to have a better relationship with the USA, these guidelines will cause economic damages "not only to state companies, but also to cooperatives, and will especially hurt private sector workers " of the island.
