When Jerich Marco Alcantara's excited friends and relatives piled into a New York City subway vehicle on Tuesday, they were hoping to travel from their home in Queens, New York, to Alcantara's graduation from Hunter College on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

In an effort to lighten the mood, Alcantara says he yelled out, "Thanks for coming to my graduation everybody". He was scheduled to graduate with his class at Hunter-Bellevue College of Nursing on Tuesday, May 30, 2017. Minutes turned to hours.

A New York City nursing student didn't let a stalled train ruin his graduation day.

Because he missed such an important event, however, his fellow stranded New Yorkers hosted a makeshift graduation ceremony on the crowded subway auto.

Alcantara's family and his friend Bobby Rahman were with him for the ride from Elmhurst, Queens. Alcantara says when he finally arrived at the graduation almost three hours later his friends and family threw him a mini celebration.

Man arrested in theft of Portland train victim's ring
Taliesin Myrddin Namkai Meche, 23, also died in the attack, while Micah Fletcher, 21, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. George Tschaggeny was wearing Ricky Best's ring when officers arrested him Friday morning beneath an overpass, Sgt.

His best friend had brought a speaker along to play music during the ceremony, so they made a decision to put on tunes associated with graduations, like "Good Riddance (Time of your Life)" by Green Day in honor of Alcantara's replacement ceremony.

Meanwhile, back at the real graduation ceremony, Alcantara's friends were wondering where he was. From there, the ceremony commenced, complete with handshakes, hugs, applause, someone playing Green Day's "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" on their phone, and even a "diploma", of which ABC 7 has a photo.

"And they played some music for me there as well", he said.

So in true NY fashion, you make the most of what you've got, even if that means one of life's biggest moments has to go down on the E-train. Nadiya Afzal shot the entire thing with her cell phone.
