This Is Why A Congressman Is Officially Proposing Impeaching President Trump

"As the investigations move forward, additional evidence supporting additional Articles of Impeachment may emerge", Sherman wrote in a letter to his colleagues.

But given Comey's bombshell statements last week about the president's inappropriate comments to him, Sherman said it's Congress' job to hold Trump accountable.

On Sunday, former U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said there is evidence to begin a case for obstruction of justice against Trump.

Rep. Maxine Waters, D-California, who called again for Trump's impeachment at Sunday's Pride event in West Hollywood, has not contacted Sherman's office, Seaver said.

Most observers think that the testimony last week by fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey provides clear and compelling evidence of obstruction of justice by President Trump.

Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.) has said that if the allegations in a memo Comey leaked last month are true, they are grounds for impeachment.

Rep. Brad Sherman listens to former FBI Director James Comey testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee in the Hart Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill June 8, 2017.

"I would hope that the Article, once submitted, would receive expeditious consideration by the Judiciary Committee", he said in a letter to lawmakers. If there are multiple articles of impeachment, i.e. multiple charges, the House then votes on which of the charges should be brought against the president. Still, Sherman reached out to his Democratic and Republican colleagues in the House for support in impeaching Trump, saying,"The evidence we have is sufficient to move forward now". I am calling for his impeachment because we should expect conduct from our presidents that does not damage national security and obstruct justice in a very important FBI investigation.

Sherman also knows that some Democrats will be cautious about acting to impeach Trump because that might lead to the elevation of a right-wing Republican, Vice President Mike Pence, to the presidency.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has warned there aren't enough facts to pursue impeachment proceedings for now.

Obstruction was an article of impeachment against President Richard Nixon before he resigned and was one of the counts on which the House impeached President Bill Clinton, who was later acquitted by the Senate.

Sherman asked for the House to move as quickly as possible for the removal of the President in order to "ensure a competent government that respects the Constitution and the rule of law".
