Scotland boss proud of players after draw with England

Harry Kane's stoppage-time equalizer rescued a 2-2 draw for England against Scotland in a World Cup qualifier after a pair of late Leigh Griffiths free kicks looked to have completed a dramatic comeback on Saturday.

England looked to be crawling towards a just deserved albeit boring 1-0 win thanks to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's finish but two wonder strikes from Leigh Griffiths in the 87th and 90th minute put Scotland on the brink of their first win against the Three Lions since 1985.

The England boss took the squad away with the Royal Marines in an unorthodox start to the global break and, having boldly - if understandably - overlooked Wayne Rooney, handed Harry Kane the captaincy in Scotland.

The Tottenham Hotspur striker described that as "the most special moment" of his worldwide career, as he complemented captaining the global side for the first time with that key late goal, and thereby showed exactly the type of leadership Gareth Southgate had asked for in the build-up.

"I think it was an important moment for the team, important moment individually for Harry", Southgate said.

"It's a game we should win, a game we were in total control of", the England boss told ITV.

"The challenge is how do we become the best team in the world?"

"But one lapse of concentration has cost us in the end and instead of getting three points we got one".

"I don't think there's anything Joe Hart could have done about them and you just have to give credit where it is due".

The former Scotland and Manchester United midfielder said he was impressed with the physical presence of Gareth Southgate's young England side - and how his men coped with it.

"The manner in which we lost it right at the end, that's Harry Kane".

"When I first came into the England squad, Wazza [Rooney] was great with me".

Scotland next travel to Lithuania and then host Malta and Slovakia, who are four points ahead of Strachan's side in second, before facing Slovenia away from home in their final group game. I didn't want to lose my first game as England captain, especially against Scotland.

"The atmosphere in the changing-room would have been a party if we'd won", he said.

'I know what I want to do and this team has great ambition.

England, who were not impressive overall, remain top of Group F on 14 points while Scotland are in fourth spot on eight points.

"On our day we can match any-body". These guys are giants, they play at a different level to most of us, and they kept coming back.

"We are in pole position and it's in our hands. One point is not what we wanted but nothing in football surprises me", he told BBC Radio 5 live.
