Notre Dame attacker had pledged allegiance to ISIS

A man who attacked police officers at Notre Dame cathedral pledged support to Islamic State in a video, it has been revealed.

The attack comes as France is on high alert after jihadists killed seven people in London on Saturday.

Officials warned people to stay away from the area after saying there was an "incident" at the popular tourist destination, BBC reported.

The lawyers said Ikken's friends and family can not believe that he is suspected in the attack, adding: "It's not the person we knew".

France is part of the US-led global coalition fighting IS and has carried out air strikes against militants in Syria.

Documents found on the attacker identified him as a 40-year-old Algerian student doing a doctorate on the media at a university in eastern France. He was also carrying two kitchen knives and "other unsophisticated weapons" with him at the time.

14 Loretto Academy students and six adults were in Paris during the attack outside the Notre Dame Cathedral, Sister Mary E. Boesen told ABC-7.

The attack came as newly elected French President Emmanuel Macron is making good on a campaign promise to beef up counterterrorism efforts by creating a new unit to improve intelligence-sharing.

Malaysian Airline flight MH 128 returns to Melbourne after bomb scare
Lisa Wood, whose father was on the plane, said a "lunatic" announced that he had "a bomb" about 20 minutes into the flight. The man who tried to enter the cockpit was reportedly subdued by other passengers, according to social media reports.

The country has been in a state of emergency since November 2015 when 130 people were killed in co-ordinated attacks across the capital .

The suspect later claimed to be a "soldier of the caliphate" of the Islamic State group, according to a source close to the investigation. His thesis adviser, Arnaud Mercier, told broadcaster BFM that the suspect spoke Swedish, Arabic and French and that his resume mentioned that he had worked as a journalist in Sweden and Algeria.

Florian once headed France's DST regional intelligence service that was disbanded under former president Nicolas Sarkozy.

While a police officer was injured in the attack, the man sustained wounds to the chest from the gunshots and was taken to hospital to receive treatment. Government spokesman Christophe Castaner said the man had "never shown any sign of radicalisation" before the attack. One police officer suffered minor injuries in the attack.

"I don't believe at all that he was radicalized", he said in a phone interview.

But he said the police response was "immediate and effective". A tenant of the apartment building housing students described him as "very quiet".

The suspect's thesis director said that he had not seen the man since November but that he had showed "no outward sign of an excessive adherence to Islam".
