The number of American voters who want Congress to impeach the president has risen to 43 percent, up from 38 percent last week, according to a new Politico/Morning Consult poll.

The initial organizing force was a group known as Free Speech for the People, a small but noisy liberal group in Amherst, Mass. that asserts Trump violated the Foreign Emoluments Clause in the Constitution because he failed to divest from his private business interests before he was sworn into office. The process of impeaching and convicting a United States president is not easy. Instead of indulging toxic impeachment daydreams, Democrats should wake up and try to work with the president, whatever his imperfections.

The Constitution gives Congress a tool to remove a President who commits severe offenses.

The process involves two steps; first the House of Representatives must pass articles of impeachment, by listing and investigating the alleged charges against the president.

By May 25, 10 city councils had issued resolutions calling for impeachment proceedings to be brought against Trump. Since Trump's inauguration, Dem's have called for Trump's impeachment to the point I became deaf to their declaration.

The chances of an impeachment would also be significantly increased if Republicans lost control of the House of Representatives in 2018's mid-term election.

That said, the firing of FBI Director James Comey over his investigation of Michael Flynn, considered by many to be an obstruction of justice, might have brought a few members of Congress closer to discussions of impeachment. The president is not above the law. "He continues to push Republican leadership in Congress to pursue an aggressive, independent investigation into President Trump's business ties, Russian connections, and any other alleged violations of United States law". While Presidents Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton were impeached, neither one had enough votes against them to drive them from the presidency. The majority of those who advocate for Trump's impeachment believe that Trump is unfit for office, but don't have a specific reason for their decision. That said, there is consensus that these scandals aren't going anywhere.

Forty-three percent does not constitute a majority, and 45 percent of those polls still say they don't support impeachment proceedings (down from 46 percent last time around), but the sharp increase in support for impeachment in a such a short time is nonetheless striking.
