Hawaii enacts law to align goals with Paris climate accord

Jerry Brown (D) is going to great lengths to oppose President Trump's plans to pull the USA out of the Paris climate accord.

Last week, several state governors and dozens of mayors across the USA pledged to uphold the guidelines set forth in the Paris Accord following President Donald Trump's announcement that he was removing the US from the agreement.

"The measure adopted relevant sections of the Paris Agreement as state law, which gives us legal basis to continue adaptation and mitigation strategies for Hawaii despite the federal government's withdrawal from the treaty", state Sen.

After the announcement, a handful of states - including Hawaii, Washington and NY - pledged to uphold the treaty's goals.

"We see the impacts of our actions", Ige said, at the ceremony. He says tides are getting higher, biodiversity is shrinking, coral is bleaching and coastlines are eroding.

"So the departure of United States of America does not really change anything in as far as the effectiveness of the climate change multi-lateral agreement is concerned", Chademana said.

Trump's predecessor signaled a dour noted about the president's move to remove the USA from the non-binding agreement.

Theresa May, Jeremy Corbyn face tough questions on live TV
On immigration, Mr Corbyn refused to be drawn on what level it would be post-Brexit, only saying it would "probably" be no higher than at present.

Although originally led by Democratic leaders like Brown, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, several Republican governors have also joined the fight.

Gov. David Ige signed two laws that aim to reduce greenhouse emissions and mitigate climate change through carbon sequestration, a process to store atmospheric carbon monoxide.

Hawaii has passed a law that will document sea level rises and set strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Like other African countries, South Africa's response to its United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) commitments are not directly influenced by the departure of the U.S., Chademana said.

Companies from every European Union nation except Poland and Greece sign up to initiative in bid to meet Paris pledges and limit effects of climate change.

Only two countries are not part of the global agreement - Syria and Nicaragua.

The reactions also break down sharply along partisan lines, as 67 percent of Republicans support Trump's action, and 8 percent of Democrats.
