He also reportedly divulged sensitive classified information about the fight against ISIS from an ally, later revealed to be Israel, that the USA had not shared with other close partners.

President Donald Trump told Russian officials in the Oval Office this month that firing the Federal Bureau of Investigation director, James Comey, had relieved "great pressure" on him, according to a document summarizing the meeting.

President Donald Trump has been narrowing a short list and interviewing candidates to replace FBI Director James Comey, whom Trump fired on May 9. "He was insane, a real nut job", Trump has reportedly told Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Russian ambassador to the US Sergey Kislyak in the Oval Office on May 10, the day after he dismissed Comey, according to the document.

The White House press secretary, Sean Spicer, said in a statement on Friday that "by grandstanding and politicizing the investigation into Russia's actions, James Comey created unnecessary pressure on our ability to engage and negotiate with Russian Federation".

Even in a news cycle that has frequently stretched the limits of credibility, the notion that Trump would boast of eliminating this "pressure" to Russian officials might seem inconceivable. "I wrote a brief memorandum to the attorney general summarizing my long-standing concerns about Director Comey's public statements concerning the Secretary Clinton email investigation". After all, he more or less admitted it a few days later.

It's unclear how the White House believes Comey politicized the case, but he testified publicly that the probe was ongoing a week before he was sacked.

Rosenstein only told House members that he appointed a special counsel to restore Americans' faith in the Russian Federation investigation, saying that interference in US elections should not be a partisan issue.

Rosenstein said he first learned of Trump's intent to remove Comey on May 8. At no point does he say he felt any legal pressure.

Former Liverpool forward Dean Saunders believes winning the EFL Cup and the Europa League should not be considered a good season for Manchester United.

'Notwithstanding my personal affection for Director Comey, I thought it was appropriate to seek a new leader, ' Rosenstein said.

"It explicitly usurped the role of the attorney general, the deputy attorney general and the entire Department of Justice", Rosenstein said of that public announcement.

The White House doubled down on that stance Friday, with Spicer saying Comey's investigation was harming U.S.

"There was considerable frustration in the room", said Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., a member of the Armed Services Committee.

Massachusetts Democratic congressman Seth Moulton says Rosenstein didn't "do a lot to bolster our confidence in him". I stand by it, ' Rosenstein told lawmakers in two closed-door meetings Friday.

He added, "I chose the issues to include in my memorandum". Rosenstein added, though, "I believe that he made his decisions in good faith". Rosenstein denounced that as "profoundly wrong and unfair".

Trump has reacted furiously to the appointment of a special counsel, a prosecutor with wide authority to investigate Russia's interference and other potential crimes uncovered. Rosenstein said he had "discussed the need for new leadership at the FBI" with then-senator Sessions last winter. The United States government officially announced a year ago that Russian Federation had meddled in the 2016 election. He said in a statement that Comey had put unnecessary pressure on the president's ability to conduct diplomacy with Russian Federation on matters such as Syria, Ukraine and the Islamic State group.
