New NFL rules shorten overtime and provide leniency on celebrations

Raymond James Stadium is expected to be the home of Super Bowl LV

In an email from Commissioner Roger Goodell sent to fans in an effort to deliver "a more exciting game experience", the commissioner said the new guidelines came after conversations with more than 80 current and former players. It's a big step in the right direction, allowing players to express themselves more freely and creatively.

On Tuesday, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell informed the league's owners of a few significant rule changes that will take effect this season. Players are allowed to use the ball as a prop, celebrate in groups and celebrate on the ground, as per ESPN.

A player who dunks after a touchdown, or tries to, will be subject to a 15-yard penalty and a possible fine.

The league will continue to penalize any celebration deemed offensive, including those that embarrass opponents or mimic the use of weapons.

The NFL's 32 owners also voted to shorten overtime periods from the traditional 15 minutes to 10 minutes.

In terms of roster moves, the National Football League made a decision to eliminate the reduction from 90 players to 75 players that occurs in between Week 3 and Week 4 of the preseason. The NFL previously only allowed one player to return from injured reserve during the season.

Also approved at the meeting was the Oakland Raiders lease for a stadium in Las Vegas, where the team is expected to play the 2020 season.

LEADING OFF: Adams set to join Braves, Yankees-Rays reset
Freeman was leading the majors in slugging percentage when he was hurt, hitting.341 with 14 home runs. He is batting.275 with 13 doubles, one home run and 15 RBI in 35 games for Single-A Rome this season.

Also a new rule that will take effect this year is the elimination of the first round of roster cuts.

Of course, there's room for debate about why any celebrations have to be policed at all, considering that literally everybody else in the football universe is allowed to react with as much joy as possible after a touchdown, except the person scoring it.

Many believe that it will only result in more games ending in a tie, which likely could be the case as there have only been five games that have ended in a tie since 2010.

"We don't think it will lead to more ties", Goodell said. The move gives teams greater roster flexibility and a chance to have their best players on the field for important late-season games. In years past, teams had three rounds of roster cuts to get to the league mandated 53 man roster.

Personally, I love this rule, as I feel like the old rules of players not being able to come off IR are outdated. Under the league's old rules, just one player could return once placed on the list.

Another major headline is that the National Football League owners have moved the locations of Super Bowl LV from Los Angeles to Tampa Bay.

As NFL Network's Judy Battista pointed out, the rule change is aimed at helping improve player safety.
