McIlroy to undergo test on troublesome back

Rory Mc Ilroy

An MRI scan on his injured back when he returns to Belfast will determine whether or not Rory McIlroy will be able to compete at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth on Thursday week.

McIlroy missed events in the Middle East and United States in the early part of this year after suffering a stress fracture to a rib.

However, scans have shown that the pain he felt at Sawgrass was a "low-grade response" to his previous injury and is not set to keep him out for any length of time.

On Monday, McIlroy told Ewan Murray of the Guardian that the MRI confirmed no new injury to his back or ribs.

McIlroy played four times in six weeks through the Masters before taking a three-week break to get married. The back has been the most common area of injury for players, from Tiger Woods' re-aggravated back injury to Dustin Johnson's fall at the Masters. He said last week's pain was closer to "4 or 5".

Jon Rahm continues to play at a high level no matter the course or conditions.

The Northern Irishman is even-par for his first two rounds at TPC Sawgrass and now sits nine shots off the pace set by Louis Oosthuizen and Kyle Stanley.

Rahm enters the third round with momentum. "I practiced all day again on Saturday, and then I started to feel stiffness on Sunday".

Danny Willett's troubles continued after withdrawing only nine holes into his second round.
