President Donald Trump will nominate Callista Gingrich as US ambassador to the Vatican, according to several reports published Sunday.

Callista Gingrich, a former congressional aide who is now an author and president of a multimedia production company, considers herself a devout Catholic.

President Donald Trump will be visiting the Vatican later this month as part of his first foreign trip.

The decision to nominate Gingrich has been made, but the announcement has taken longer than expected pending approval from the Office of Government Ethics, an administration official said.

The choir visited Rome in 2005 to honor John Paul II and sang for Pope Benedict XVI during his official visit to the U.S.in 2008. Rick Santorum for the position, a source with knowledge of the nomination process told the New York Times. Newt neither confirmed nor denied the nomination, saying they were told to "be very cautious" until an actual nomination was announced.

But the Vatican, under Pope Francis, has shifted many of its traditional stances on divorce, and other social issues.
