Firing 'nut job' James Comey took off pressure, says Donald Trump

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov denies discussing the firing of former FBI Director James Comey with President Donald Trump during his White House visit earlier this month.

White House hopes that Mr Trump could leave scandalous allegations at home were crushed in a one-two punch of revelations that landed shortly after his departure.

The GOP senator's comments come as the Trump administration grapples with series of bombshell stories surrounding the investigation into possible coordination between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation during the 2016 presidential election.

The White House has said the firing was unrelated to the FBI's Russian Federation investigation. The day before, Rosenstein told senators that Trump had made a decision to fire Comey before asking Rosenstein for a memo offering justification for the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director's sacking.

Comey's commitment to testify comes after a tough week for President Trump, who has been hit with numerous scandals since he sacked the Federal Bureau of Investigation director - including two more potential bombshells published by the New York Times and Washington Post on Friday.

During his meetings with lawmakers, Mr Rosenstein said that his conversations with Mr Sessions revealed his long-held belief that Mr Comey should be replaced, based on his public statements related to the investigation of former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, beginning in July past year.

"I faced great pressure because of Russian Federation". The meeting raised eyebrows and faced additional public scrutiny when news broke that Russian Ambassador to the US Sergey Kislyak, whom current and former US intelligence officials say is a top Russian spy and recruiter of spies (a notion Russian officials have dismissed), also attended.

Burr and Warner sent Comey a formal invitation to testify before an open or closed session of the intelligence committee earlier this week, though the former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief had indicated his preference to speak in public.

The ex-FBI chief has not spoken publicly since his surprise firing last week.

"I am hopeful that he will clarify for the American people recent events that have been broadly reported in the media", said Senator Richard Burr, the Republican chairman of the committee.
