Divings bans to be introduced to English football

When Ross County striker Alex Schalk threw himself to the ground under no contact whatsoever to win his side a late penalty against Celtic last month, everyone who saw the damning footage knew what was coming next.

If they are unanimous in believing a player deceived a match official, the sanction will be a two-match ban.

Then Hull winger Robert Snodgrass apologised for diving in a Premier League match against Crystal Palace earlier this season.

The new offence of "successful deception of a match official" is based on a law already used in Scotland and was approved at the FA's annual general meeting at Wembley on Thursday.

There have been a number of notable cases this season, with England pair Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford among those to come under the microscope.

Incidents will be reviewed by a panel made up of a former player, a former referee and a former manager. The player contested the charge, but the compliance officer's verdict was upheld.

All council members will have to be active members of the organisations they are elected or nominated to represent, ending the creation of senior vice-presidents and life vice-presidents, who will also lose voting rights.

Should "deception" have been proven to have taken place, the player who received a yellow or red card will have that rescinded.

In December, five ex-FA bosses asked the government to intervene and change an organisation they described as being held back by "elderly white men".

At the start of May, the FA announced they will be trialling "Sin Bins" in grassroots fixtures across age groups. It's a longer suspension than players get for a (two yellow card) sending off, after all.

The sin bin caution will not attract the usual £10 fee that bookings now do at grassroots level.

The main proposals are for the board to be reduced from 12 members to 10, with three of those positions reserved for women by 2018 - Dame Heather Rabbatts is the only woman on the current board. And term limits of three three-year stints will also be introduced for board and council members.
