'The Crown' Leads BAFTA Television Award Nominations

Tom Hiddleston and nearly all his fellow cast members in The Night Manager have been overlooked at the Bafta Television Awards despite their victories at the Golden Globes in America past year.

The show, which began life as a monologue at Edinburgh Fringe festival, picked up three nominations, including best comedy and two nods in the best female performance category, for Waller-Bridge's portrayal of Fleabag and Olivia Colman, who portrays her passive-aggressive stepmother.

It leads the way for May's ceremony, picking up nods including best drama and best supporting actors for Jared Harris, Vanessa Kirby and John Lithgow.

The nominations were announced by actors Andrew Buchan and Michael Coelho at BAFTA headquarters.

Other nominations went to BBC Two's miniseries The Hollow Crown: The Wars Of The Roses and to its Leading Actor Benedict Cumberbatch.

Creator and writer Peter Morgan said: "I am beyond thrilled for The Crown to have been recognised in a year where so much wonderful work has been achieved in British television".

Also nearly completely shut out was the BBC's acclaimed adaptation of War and Peace, which picked up one nomination for Best Drama Series, an honor for which it'll have to beat The Crown, The Durrells and Happy Valley.

"We are all giddy and delighted".

The one-off drama, retelling the tragic story of Damilola Taylor, who died in 2000, is also nominated for both single drama and supporting actress, Wunmi Mosaku.

Strictly Come Dancing is nominated for best entertainment programme, with an additional nomination for Claudia Winkleman for best entertainment performance. Claire Foy should also win the BAFTA for Best Actress.

The BAFTA TV Awards will take place on May 14 in London and will be hosted for the first time by former Great British Bake Off presenter Sue Perkins.

The Night Manager's relatively poor showing, with just one nomination for supporting actor Tom Hollander, was what most upset viewers on Twitter, with Duncan Bruce, coordinator at the National Film and Television School, writing: "Bafta clearly not a fan of The Night Manager".
