Williams' Snapchat post, quickly highlighted in U.S. media, showed the 35-year-old in a yellow swimsuit that revealed an apparent baby bump.

Williams deleted the photo shortly after it appeared and waited more than six hours to make any public comment, stoking debate among tennis fans about whether or not she was joking. Also WTA had removed its message of congratulations, but on Wednesday night Serena's publicist, Kelly Bush Novak, confirmed the news to the media, saying that she is due to give birth this fall, probably at the end of September or October.

She pulled out of the recent tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami citing a knee injury but was scheduled to play at the Madrid Open next month.

Tennis superstar Serena Williams is pregnant and expecting to deliver her first baby this fall, her spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

If Williams is 20 weeks into her pregnancy, that means she was already expecting when she won her record-setting 23rd Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January - where she beat her elder sister Venus in the final.

Earlier this week she posted an Instagram photo of the couple enjoying time on the beach. Azarenka, 27, is planning to return to competition in July after Wimbledon. Only one woman has won more: Margaret Smith Court, who claimed part of her 24 during the amateur era.

Williams is the oldest woman to win a Grand Slam singles title and still dominates the tour at an age when most players have retired. "I just keep saying, 'February, I'll start looking at the bigger picture of my life.' But right now, I'm just so focused".

"I've known women who are back to running fast 5Ks in a month because they ran probably up until 36 weeks without much problem", Pivarnik said. With the current No. 1, Angelique Kerber, struggling, Williams will return to the top spot on Monday.

Williams has made no secret of her desire to have a family.
