Nunes Claims Democrats Are Not Serious About Russia Investigation

Senate Select Intelligence Committee Chairman Sen. Richard Burr right confers with ranking member Sen. Mark Warner left during a hearing of the Senate Select Intelligence Committee Thursday in Washington D.C

Top Democrats on Capitol Hill, including Senate and House Minority Leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi as well as the House Intelligence Committee's ranking member, Adam Schiff, all called for Nunes' removal from the House investigation on Monday.

The news Monday that Nunes met his source on White House grounds sparked the latest round of partisan fighting, which has left investigators unable to continue right now. "And he's the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee".

Democrats believe Nunes is too close to the White House to lead a thorough investigation into Russia - including ties between the Trump camp and Russian officials - an assertion firmly rejected by the GOP. That collection, he added, was not related to Russian Federation.

Asked to weigh in on calls for Nunes to recuse himself, the Republican source responded, "That's horses-".

In a statement released Wednesday, March 29, Takano said due to the "bizarre covert actions" of Nunes, R-Tulare, "it is clear that such an investigation is not possible under his leadership".

Nunes on Wednesday said, "We're beginning to figure out who's actually serious about the investigation".

"We always want to keep the committee bipartisan".

"I had been working this for a long time with many different sources and needed a place that I could actually finally go because I knew what I was looking for and I could actually get access to what I needed to see", said Nunes, adding, "It wasn't at night ... nobody was sneaking around, all it was was just a place where I had to go to be able to review this information".

Regarding that participation, Nunes said Democrats on the committee did not provide a witness list of whom they wanted to call to testify.

But Schiff argued it was up to Nunes to restore credibility in the committee's investigation.

"I don't understand how Nunes can cancel hearings and say it's our fault", Rep. Eric Stalwell, D-Calif., said, Business Insider reports.

A representative for Rep. Mike Quigley, a Democrat from IL on the committee, echoed Swalwell, saying "neither of those claims are accurate".

"Additionally, the minority proposed days ago that two hearings be scheduled for next week - both the closed hearing with [James] Comey and [Mike] Rogers requested by the majority and the open hearing with [Sally] Yates, [James] Clapper and [John] Brennan that had been previously agreed to by both parties and canceled abruptly and unilaterally by the chair".

"Democrats welcome the opportunity to hear from Comey at any time", she said, "but that can not take the place of an open hearing".

A Republican House Intelligence Committee source defended the decision to try and move the Comey and Rogers hearing behind closed doors, saying Democrats are trying to kill the investigation. I did not support having one substitute for another.

Wolf Blitzer's CNN panel on Thursday discussed the "clandestine" nature of House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes' (R-CA) information-gathering in recent weeks. "In the end, we ended up doing neither". They had yet to hear back, the aide said.

Jack Langer, Nunes' spokesperson, disputed the Democrats' denials, reiterating that the chairman's earlier assertions were true.
