Netflix on the verge of hitting 100 million subscribers

As part of its first-quarter earnings report Monday, Netflix responded to investor questions about Amazon's purchase of streaming rights for National Football League games next season.

In North America, key releases this past quarter included A Series of Unfortunate Events, a dark comedy, Santa Clarita Diet, a "zom-com" starring Drew Barrymore, and Ultimate Beastmaster, Netflix's first competition show that pits athletes from around the globe against a fearsome 600-foot obstacle course. The actual figure came in at 4.95 million additional subscribers.

Up to Monday's close, Netflix's stock had risen almost 19 percent in 2017, outperforming the roughly 5 percent gain in the broader S&P 500 index .SPX . They had gained 15 percent this year through April 13.

Around 51 million of Netflix's users are from the U.S. By the end of 2017, Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson anticipates the bulk of the company's subscribers to be from outside the nation.

Netflix subscriber base was set to exceed 100 million global subscribers soon. HBO has 134 million subscribers worldwide, including viewers paying for an internet-only version of the channel that was inspired by Netflix's success.

The company described the opportunity for its service as "gigantic" and said it planned to continue investing in films and shows tailored to win fans in countries around the world.

In the wake of a series of genre-busting content and platform deals that have blurred the lines between broadcasters and subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) providers, Netflix flatly rejected the possibility of live sports programming on its platform.

The company could turn the tide in the second quarter, typically one of its weakest.

Fate of Turkey's divisive referendum rests with voters
The "yes" vote would mean approval of constitutional changes that would replace the parliamentary system with a presidential one. The Erdogan government has used the emergency powers to conduct a sweeping purge of the military, judiciary and civil service.

ReThink Technology Solutions estimates the current SVOD market in Europe to be ~$5.0 billion.

The heavy second-quarter schedule comes with costs and highlights a dilemma.

Netflix spoke about how this fall could be blamed on the fact that it's made the decision to move some of its most popular shows to the second quarter of the year.

Netflix missed its subscriber targets for the first three months of 2017 but is still set to reach the 100 million customers mark over the next week. Netflix guided to Q2 revenue of $2.755 billion slightly above Baird's $2.72 billion estimate, with EPS of $0.15 below the firm's $0.21 estimate and consensus.

Netflix says it plans to operate with about $2 billion in negative cash flow this year to aggressively grow its original content slate. Netflix said it will spend more than $1 billion this year to "drive member acquisition".

Netflix growth was slower than expected in the first 3 months of this year.
