Jennifer Hudson Covers Whitney & More at All-Star Salute to Clive Davis

The man who launched the careers of Jennifer Hudson, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Alicia Keys, and Earth Wind and Fire was honored in New York City Wednesday night. Based on Davis" 2013 bestselling autobiography, CLIVE DAVIS: "THE SOUNDTRACK OF OUR LIVES is a riveting profile of the legendary music man, who is a five-time Grammy victor, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and recipient of The Recording Academy's Lifetime Achievement Award. The event was one part fete to music powerhouse Clive Davis, and also a parade of some of the biggest living artists who bloomed under his tutelage, mixed in with some pot shots at the current administration.

Clive Davis: Soundtrack of My Generation opened the downtown film festival last night at Radio City Music Hall, funnily located in midtown Manhattan, and not Tribeca. It seems unlikely that Apple would release "Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives" theatrically, instead it will likely focus on a digital release via Apple Music.

As part of the tribute, Oscar and Grammy Award victor Jennifer Hudson performed a medley of the biggest hits of Whitney Houston - the protege who Davis discovered and mentored but ultimately could not save from premature death.

But it is a testament that, after the film, all these legendary artists showed up at Radio City Music Hall to put on one hell of a show for him. Davis earned a loud cheer from the audience when he started dancing.

Rocking a white dress and gamely shimmying across the stage, she dished out solid if unspectacular versions of "You Make me Feel Like a (Natural Woman)" and "Freeway of Love", and saluted Davis' influence on the music world. "But I wasn't going to miss this evening".

From 1967 to 1973, Davis was the president of Columbia Records.

Praising Clive Davis she said, "He's not only the chieftain who sits in his office taking care of his business, he takes care of his artists as well". A music critic featured prominently throughout the film notes that Davis landed at the nexus of "not just a social revolution, but a musical revolution". His documentary will be available on Apple Music.
