Google Earth gets revival with tools for exploration

"You use Google Earth to get lost".

There are more than 50 tours included in this aspect of Google Earth, suitably named Voyager. Furthermore, Google Earth is now modern: you no longer need to download and install to experience the world. One of the main new features on Google Earth is called Voyager, which is capable of providing users with an interactive guided tour. That info is usually provided on Google's Knowledge Cards, which you'll be familiar with if you've ever used Maps.

The new Google Earth is available on the web in Chrome and is rolling out to Android phones this week. If you've always preferred Google Maps to Apple Maps, then this new feature will come in handy.

Another new feature is a 3D button that lets you view a place from any angle.

I'm feeling lucky - takes you to a random location on Earth.

People can snap a "postcard" that captures a memory or a dream vacation spot and send it to friends and family. It's everything you love about Google Earth, plus new ways for you to explore, learn and share. Once you've been transported to one of over 20,000 locations you can open "Knowledge Cards" to learn history and facts of the location.

Only viewable on the web version, Google Earth still looks exactly like its old version in terms of features, but has been improved and has a few other tools added to it. Recipients can click the link to jump right to where the user was virtually standing.

Google has finally started bringing some of its search clout into Earth. For instance, a collection called "This is Home", highlights traditional houses around the world like reed houses in Peru or Bedouin tents in Jordan. You're invited to step inside a Peruvian chuclla, a Bedouin tent and a Greenlandic IIoq, and meet the people who live there.

Google mentions that the new features will be rolled out to the Android app via an update to version 9.0 sometime this week, but until that time, you'll be able to view Google Earth in all its glory on the web.

While in recent years, the service seems to have faded from the collective consciousness, Google today is hoping to jug our memories by introducing an overhauled Google Earth. Check back to visit more homes in the coming months.
