District attorney: New developments in slain jogger case

An arrest has been made in connection to the death of Vanessa Marcotte, sources tell 5 Investigates. There were also signs that she had struggled with her attacker.

She was found dead on August 7, 2016, near Brooks Station Road in Princeton, just a few hours after her family said she went for a jog. He is being held at the Millbury State Police barracks on $1 million cash bail.

Standing in front of the Princeton Police Department Saturday afternoon, Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early opened a press conference with these three short words, drawing cheers and applause from the crowd that had gathered to hear the latest news on the murder of 27-year-old Vanessa Marcotte.

Although Ortiz has not been formally charged with murder yet, Early said he anticipates a murder charge soon, and referenced Ortiz as Marcotte's "killer". DNA from a possible suspect was obtained during Marcotte's autopsy, and on Friday, state police learned of a DNA match.

Her body was found in a remote, wooded area a half mile away later that evening. She worked as an account manager for Google in NY. Police said her body was naked and partially burned.

The arrest in the case came as a relief to many in Princeton, a close-knit community of just over 3,000. "No one ever stopped thinking about Ms. Marcotte and how we could solve this case".

He will be arraigned in Leominster District Court on Tuesday.
