It was nearly as if gasoline was used to start a tiny little fire when a report swirled last week of head coach Sean Payton having breakfast with Manziel during Super Bowl week, which quickly escalated into the Saints wanting to sign him.
The Cooks trade rumors gave rise to reports that the Patriots were considering trading cornerback Malcolm Butler straight-up for the receiver, but Payton said that "wasn't the case", according to the Boston Herald'sJeff Howe.
And Butler, who has yet to sign his one-year offer sheet with the Patriots (worth $3.91 million), has until April 21 to sign elsewhere. The former first-round bust of the Browns has said he's re-committed himself to the sport in hopes of getting another chance, but it's hard to see a team taking the plunge, even though Manziel is still only 24.
The Saints won't sign Butler to an offer sheet and risk losing the 11th overall pick in the draft. And so I met him and had breakfast at the Super Bowl. "It made sense to me to get to know him a little bit".

Kensington Palace spokesmen have refused to comment on suggestions that an engagement announcement for Harry could be imminent. They celebrate the special day on March 26, and so far, there has been no word on how that visit went.

If the Pats and Saints were to come together on a deal for Butler, it would be the second significant trade of the offseason between to the two teams.
Butler finished last regular season with four interceptions and 17 pass breakups. But if he signs the tender before the draft, when teams are more apt to wheel and deal, it opens the possibility that he could be part of a draft-day trade if the Patriots and Saints - who have struck eight trades between them in the Bill Belichick era - can agree on compensation. Currently, it's my understanding he hasn't signed his tender, so it was just that. "It was the first time I met him and we spent some time kind of going through his story".
When the Payton report came out, it seemed much more likely that the coach was just meeting with the QB as a courtesy.
"I think it will speed up for the fans and the coaches, not having to wait for a timeout to find out what's going on", Arians said.
